New Moon!

I FINALLY finished New Moon. I have several complaints but I do have some good things to say about it.

First of all, Bella could not be anymore the simpering female! From a feminist POV that is unacceptable. It annoys me to no end how much of an effect she lets Edward have on her. The sappy, "I can't live without you" thing drives me nuts, it's why I don't read romance novels! And this, and Twilight, is really just a YA romance novel under the guise of Vampires. I think I would like this series better if Bella was more of an independent woman who just happens to love a Vampire. Also, Ms. Meyers just drags everything out and fills the pages with unimportant details. It really should not take 600 pages to tell this story! Long novels like that drive me insane unless it keeps me interested, unless the end sneaks up on you. Meyers' writing doesn't seem to have any personality.

All that being said, I do like the series in general. Not my favorite but I'll probably read the books to come (Eclipse comes out in August) if not only because I started it. I like the Vampire stuff, with the Volturi and the powers that the Cullens have, I just wish there was a bit more of that and less of Bella pining. Maybe I'm missing the point of what Ms. Meyers was trying to get across, maybe I missed the underlying message due to my annoyance. I realize it's a love story but I had not counted on such whiney, attached pining.

I say, if you like Vampires and if you are into love stories and romance, then these books are for you, no doubt. But if you have any kind of feminist ideal you will be annoyed! I just don't want my own opinion to scare anyone else off. Try it if you want! We may just have different tastes.
